Tips For Removing Common Carpet Stains

When something gets spilled on your carpet, you probably immediately worry about it staining and get straight to work cleaning it. Cleaning spills as soon as they happen greatly reduces the risk of staining, but some substances will leave a stain regardless of how quickly you spring into action. Then there are those spills you don't know about until you notice a stain days or weeks later. These can be much trickier to remove, particularly without the aid of commercial-grade carpet cleaning products. There are times when you need to call in the professionals to get rid of stains and keep your carpets looking fresh and clean, but here are some tips to try first on common stains when they're fresh:

Removing Coffee

If you have a fresh coffee stain on your carpet, you should use an absorbent cloth or sponge to soak up as much of the liquid as you can. Then, try mixing some bicarbonate of soda with a little water to create a paste. Spread the paste on the stain and leave it until it's dry. The bicarbonate of soda will hopefully absorb the coffee, and once it's dry, you can vacuum it off your carpet.

Removing Milk

In addition to looking bad, milk stains can also smell unpleasant. As with coffee, you should soak up as much of the milk as you can and then spray some distilled white vinegar onto the carpet. Gently rub it in with a soft cloth to naturally disinfect the area and then pour soda crystals over the stain. Soda crystals neutralise odours and absorb liquid. Once the stain has dried out, simply vacuum the soda crystals off the carpet.

Removing Ink

If there is any risk that your carpet can be stained with ink, keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol on hand. Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to a cloth and blot the ink stain with the cloth. Work from the edge of the stain towards the middle to prevent spreading the stain, and don't be tempted to rub the stain. Each time the section of cloth you are using becomes saturated with ink, add some rubbing alcohol to a clean section and begin blotting again. When the ink has been removed, you can remove the rubbing alcohol residue by spraying the carpet with warm water and then soaking this up with an absorbent cloth.

Knowing how to tackle different types of stains can prevent damage to your carpet, but if you have a stubborn stain or old stains that are set into your carpet, call a carpet cleaning company for help. With their cleaning equipment and commercial products, they can get even deep-set stains out of your carpets.
